KAORU saucer black
Our Kaoru range combines the soft lines from traditional Western porcelain with the sharp lines favoured by the Japanese into a tea set inspired by Chinese teaware. The fusion between classic and modern, West and East, creates a tea set that fits our modern day lifestyle. From Japanese sencha and Chinese tea to Western black tea, with the Kaoru series you can enjoy them all. Set on a white, porcelain tray, the delicate elegance becomes apparent to anyone who uses it. The teacups are perfect for Gyokuro (high quality green tea) at a temperature of about 60 degrees C. The series got its name because the cups/pot allow the fragrance of the tea to come through very nicely. (Kaoru means “to smell”)

Lacquerware
Yamanaka City, Ishikawa Prefecture
A vermillion lacquer comb, said to date from the Jomon period (about 6000 years ago), looked almost unchanged from its original form when it was excavated. This speaks to the high strength and durability of lacquer.
As wooden dishes, lacquerware keep warm food from cooling off. The hues of lacquer--the black and vermilion lacquer which calmly looms within traditional Japanese houses, obscured by shadow―emit a modest elegance which is beloved by the Japanese. Perhaps this quality is what makes lacquer so appealing.
Carefully, slowly, and laboriously made, lacquerware develops a more lustrous black or brilliant vermilion hue over time, with the lacquer becoming more transparent the longer it is used, bringing about a deeper flavor. Even if scratched or broken after long periods of use, lacquerware can be repaired because it is made from natural materials. Putting it back into shape and recoating the surface allows it to be passed down over generations for decades of further use. The gorgeous and delicate appearance may make you hesitate to use it, but please feel the richness of this lacquerware which, imbued with the special characteristics of lacquer, is suited for daily use and for formal occasions, and for Western styles in addition to Japanese.
